Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
