RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
