The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
